Production Operator I

Description

This position is an entry level position in the Production Operator series. The primary function of an employee in this class is to operate, maintain. and repair the city’s production facilities. Incumbents learn and perform a limited range of less complex or specialized work tasks. The work is performed under close supervision of the production supervisor with less latitude for independent judgment and initiative. The principal duties of this class are performed in an outdoor environment, which may involve adverse weather conditions, roadway traffic, related hazards, and confined spaces. 

Responsibilities

• Performs preventative maintenance on water meters, pumps, motors, water lines, and disinfection equipment.
• Maintains chlorine tank levels and monitors residuals in the distribution system.
• Installs meters to new properties; repairs and replaces existing water meters and lines.
• Installs meter boxes and lids; repairs and replaces existing meter boxes and lids.
• Raises or moves water meters to comply with program requirements or ease of access.
• Maintains meter inventory and chlorinating supplies.
• Performs miscellaneous maintenance tasks on a periodic basis, such as weed abatement, sprinkler replacement, painting and cleaning, etc.
• Records and reports water usage; verifies accuracy of meters.
• Processes work orders for service connections and disconnections.
• Provides information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions.
• Responds to emergency and after-hours issues.
• Consistently keeps supervisor and relevant team members informed about work progress, current and potential issues, and proactively suggests new or improved solutions to address challenges.
• Attends approved meetings, conferences, workshops, training sessions, reviews materials to remain current on the principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas.
• Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner.
• Communicates and coordinates regularly with others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities.
• Respects the opinion of others and maintains a positive and professional working relationship with colleagues, supervisors, and stakeholders.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Education, Training, and/or Experience Required:

• Graduation from High School or possession of a GED, supplemented by coursework in environmental science, business management, communications or related field.
• Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work.

Licenses, Certifications and Other Requirements:

• Possession of a current and valid driver’s license.
• Possession of Class B CDL, No Restrictions with Tanker Endorsement within 6 months of hire.
• Possession of a Class I Water Distribution License issued by the State of Idaho within 18 months of hire.
• Must be available for a mandatory on-call rotation and able to work evenings, weekends, and varying shift hours.
• Successful completion of a pre-employment background check, physical, and drug testing to include prescription medications.
• Subject to random DOT drug and alcohol testing.

Preferred

• Experience in water production, water treatment, or water distribution.
• Class I Water Treatment License issued by the State of Idaho.
• Class II Water Distribution License issued by the State of Idaho.
• Class A CDL, No Restrictions with Tanker Endorsement
