In a continued effort to enhance community safety through prevention and partnership, the Caldwell Fire Department, in collaboration with the American Red Cross, successfully installed 65 smoke alarms in 24 homes during a Smoke Detector Blitz held on April 11 in the Greenleaf community. This past weekend’s initiative provided critical, life-saving protection and early indication of fire emergencies. The neighborhood was selected through the department’s Community Risk Reduction efforts because it is outside the 4–8 minute travel time benchmark. The effort was conducted in close partnership with the City of Greenleaf leadership and Caldwell Rural Fire.

The event brought together 29 volunteers, not including Caldwell Fire Department and American Red Cross personnel. Volunteers from the CPD Explorers, Boise State University, Caldwell Public Library, CORE, BBSI, and several other community members and organizations worked side by side to canvass neighborhoods, install smoke alarms, and conduct home safety assessments. Their efforts ensured residents were better prepared in the event of a fire emergency.

“Some of these smoke alarms may never activate, and that is a success. But if even one provides a family with the time they need to escape, then every effort was worth it,” said Fire Chief Bryan Daniels. “This initiative also reflects the incredible teamwork of our volunteers and partners, who stepped up to serve beyond jurisdictional boundaries, proving that public safety is not about lines on a map, but about protecting people.”

The Caldwell Fire Department extends its sincere appreciation to the American Red Cross, the City of Greenleaf, and all volunteers and partner organizations who dedicated their time and energy to the effort. Their collective contributions demonstrate the power of collaboration and the importance of prevention in building safer, more resilient communities.

It was inspiring to witness the collaboration and dedication of everyone involved in supporting the community of Greenleaf,” said Administration Chief Wendelsdorf, Caldwell Rural Fire. “We are grateful that the homes where we installed smoke detectors will now be protected for the next 10 years, providing early notification and enhancing safety for the families who live there.

ICCU was also present during the event and generously donated $1,000 to support the department’s smoke detector supply, helping ensure continued service for elderly and disabled residents in need of smoke alarm replacements.
