During the Special City Council meeting on March 25, two items concerning the quiet zone were approved, allowing the City to move forward with planned upgrades at railroad crossings and the establishment of a railroad quiet zone.

The Council approved a resolution authorizing the acceptance of a bid for the installation of additional security features at designated railroad crossings. These improvements are designed to increase safety for both motorists and pedestrians at rail intersections throughout the community.

In addition, the Council approved an action item to move forward with establishing a railroad quiet zone. Quiet zones reduce routine train horn use in specific areas, contingent upon the implementation of federally required safety measures at crossings.

“This project is a carry-over from the prior administration. The council, through legislative power, moved the quiet zone project forward with several questions still unanswered. I will be requesting several additional safety features as pedestrian safety is of utmost importance to me,” said Mayor Eric Phillips.

The quiet zone will cover the crossings at 5th Ave, Kimball Ave, 9th Ave, 12th Ave, 21st Ave., Linden St., and Ustick Road. Total costs are estimated to be $240,000. Work is expected to begin in June.

The City of Caldwell will coordinate with appropriate partners and contractors to implement these improvements and will provide updates as the projects progress.
