Description
The City of Caldwell Engineering Department is looking for a Mapping Superintendent. Individual will manage the GIS Mapping Department and the preparation and development of mapping products and data bases for various city departments; performs related work as required.
The principal function of an employee in this class is to manage the GIS Mapping Department and direct the design and development of mapping products and databases. Work is performed under the direct supervision of the City Engineer. An employee in this class supervises employees; organizes mapping functions and tasks, and oversees the financial and organizational needs of the department. The principal duties of this class are performed in a general office environment.
Responsibilities
- Directs GIS Mapping Department including employee supervision, budget development, control of expenditures, and scheduling of assigned tasks;
- Specifies and purchases computer hardware and software to support the GIS mapping function of the city;
- Works with other city departments including Engineering, Planning, Water, Sewer, Streets, Parks, and Emergency Services to design and develop mapping products supporting the work of those departments;
- Directs the gathering of technical and field data to support GIS mapping and other department functions;
- Supervises and enforces the quality control protocol for data collection and map preparation;
- Supervises employees in data entry and map preparation;
- Prepares mapping products for purchase and use by the public;
- Reports regularly to the City Engineer on the progress and status of mapping projects;
- Responds to questions, concerns, and complaints from internal and external customers regarding mapping processes, program processes, and departmental policies and procedures;
- Provides needed information and demonstrations concerning how to perform certain work tasks to new employees in the same or similar class of positions;
- Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems, and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
- Attends meetings, conferences, workshops, training sessions, and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on the principles, practices, and new developments in assigned work areas;
- Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
- Trains, assigns, prioritizes, supervises, motivates, and evaluates the work of assigned employees. Is responsible for performance base pay program, the setting of goals, monitoring key result area (KRA) performance, and determining completion of said goals;
- Communicates and coordinates regularly with others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education, Training, and/or Experience Required:
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mapping or other related field; or
- Extensive experience in public works engineering and land use planning; or
- Any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform the work; and
- Previous experience with GIS software, AUTOCAD, surveying, and mapping; and
- Working knowledge of the use of computer and peripheral hardware to support the development of mapping products
- Subject to a pre-employment background check, and drug test to include prescription medications.
Licenses, Certifications and Other Requirements:
- Possession of a current and valid driver’s license.
