Description
The Street Department is looking for a Road Technician III to join their team. Individual operates a variety of heavy equipment to support the City’s street, drainage and right-of-way construction, maintenance and repair operations; performs related work as required.
The principal function of an employee in this class is to operate heavy equipment such as trucks, backhoe, excavator, asphalt paver, motor grader, bulldozer and front-end loader to support the City’s street and public works construction, maintenance and repair projects. The work is performed under the supervision of the Streets Superintendent. The principal duties of this class are performed in an outdoor environment, which may involve adverse weather conditions and related hazards.
Responsibilities
- Operates variety of trucks, mowers, sweepers, vacuum truck, heavy equipment, including bulldozers, road graders, excavator, asphalt paver, boom/scissor lifts, and front-end loaders for the Streets Department to support public works construction, maintenance and repair projects;
- Rough grades surfaces, levels road beds, shapes driveways and back slopes and cuts surfaces to stakes and specified grades;
- Operates light and medium duty equipment, hand and power tools;
- Removes worn, cracked or weathered asphalt using hand or power tools and loads debris for disposal;
- Grades and repairs underlay or roadbed to prepare for surface for patching;
- Rolls asphalt patching material and assures patch meets grade and standards;
- Seals and repairs asphalt and concrete infrastructures such as driveways and parking lots;
- Constructs retaining walls and other masonry structures;
- Digs trenches, secures, lowers and installs pipes and places precast or builds inlet boxes and replaces and compacts bedding and overlay material;
- Grades and prepares surfaces for concrete curbs, gutters and storm water inlets;
- Builds and sets forms and pours and finishes cement for concrete structures such as curbs, gutters and storm water inlets;
- Cleans and clears storm water inlets, drains, bridges, creeks and drainage;
- Drives sand and gravel trucks to move material and respond to winter weather conditions;
- Operates lifts at various heights;
- May provide training to others;
- Keeps immediate supervisor and designated others fully and accurately informed concerning work progress, including present and potential work problems and suggestions for new or improved ways of addressing such problems;
- Attends meetings, conferences, workshops and training sessions and reviews publications and audio-visual materials to become and remain current on the principles, practices and new developments in assigned work areas;
- Responds to citizens’ questions and comments in a courteous and timely manner;
- Communicates and coordinates regularly with appropriate others to maximize the effectiveness and efficiency of interdepartmental operations and activities;
- Cleans and restores construction areas, job sites and other project areas;
- Cleans, maintains and repairs tools, equipment and facilities;
- Fuels and inspects equipment daily, performs preventive and prescribed maintenance and makes minor repairs on equipment and tools;
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education, Training and/or Experience Required:
- Training and at least five years' work experience operating and maintaining heavy equipment. Qualifying equipment includes front-end loader, excavator, backhoe, motor grader, asphalt paver and/or similar equipment.
- At least 5 years' experience in roadway/ROW infrastructure construction and maintenance.
Licenses, Certifications and Other Requirements:
- Must be 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license.
- Possess a State of Idaho Class A CDL, No Restrictions with Tanker Endorsement.
- Flagger certification.
- CPR certification.
- First Aid certified.
- Position is subject to on-call and service response within a specified amount of time.
- Successful completion of pre-employment background check, drug testing and physical.
- Random DOT drug testing.
