About
The Caldwell Police Department and Chief Ingram are proud to introduce the Caldwell Police Mounted Unit, or “CPMU.” Our mounted unit was formed in 2023 with the express purpose of connecting the police department with all members of the community and suppressing crime with highly visible neighborhood and business patrols.
In keeping with the western heritage of the City of Caldwell, our vision is to provide a unit that serves both a ceremonial and functional purpose. Since the first police mounted unit was established in 1870, utilizing horses to accomplish the fundamentals of police work has become a nationwide standard. With over 150 police mounted units in 40 states, utilizing horses as a unique tool to enhance visibility of the police, and to foster positive community relations has become an industry standard in policing.
The reality is that caring for and maintaining horses is expensive. Costs like veterinary care, feed, boarding, equipment and training are important to cover to ensure the horses and mounted officers are at their best to serve the community. In 2024 the City Council approved a budget for the mounted unit because of the incredible impact the unit had during its first year of deployment. While the City of Caldwell provides a small budget for some nominal expenses, the vast majority of funding to operate the mounted unit comes from private donations to the Caldwell Police Mounted Unit Foundation, a 501(c)(3) non-profit, and from the officers themselves. This partnership between the community, the officers that serve, and the Police Department has created a strong bond between the police and the community.
Since the foundation of the CPMU our officers have confirmed the reality that agencies across the country have been experiencing for decades, that mounted patrols provide a unique and vital connection to the community that cannot be duplicated. Our mounted patrol officers are committed to providing the City of Caldwell with the very best service, a safe community, and an ever-strengthening bond between the Police Department and the members of the community.
