CFD Smoke Detector Blitz

In a powerful display of community partnership and fire prevention, the Caldwell Fire Department, in collaboration with the American Red Cross, installed 249 smoke alarms across 61 homes during a one-day Smoke Detector Blitz held on Saturday, April 5. The effort provided life-saving protection to 243 Caldwell residents, many of whom previously had no working smoke alarms in their homes.

The event was supported by nearly 40 volunteers, including employees from the City of Caldwell, Caldwell School District, Caldwell Public Library, Boise State University students, Destination Caldwell staff, and several dedicated community members and organizations. Volunteers canvassed Indian Creek Estates, a targeted area identified through data-driven analysis, with 25 fire incidents reported in the area within the past year.

Using insights from the department’s ongoing community risk assessment efforts, this neighborhood was strategically selected for intervention. Teams provided free bilingual assistance, home safety assessments, and smoke alarm installations, ensuring accessibility and inclusivity for all residents.

“This initiative highlights the power of prevention and partnerships,” said Deputy Chief of Prevention and Fire Marshal Alan Perry. “By working together with the Red Cross and community volunteers, we’re ensuring families in Caldwell have the tools they need to stay safe. These alarms give people critical time to escape a fire—and that can make all the difference.”

Perry also noted, “This was more than just a day of service. It was a meaningful connection between our department, our community, and our partners. We’re incredibly proud of what we accomplished together.”

Jim King from BBSI, one of the many volunteers, shared,

“It was an incredible day of teamwork and impact. Our teams hit the streets house to house, connecting with residents in serious need of smoke detectors—many still shaken from a recent nearby fires. Seeing kids draw pictures for our installers was heartwarming. The community response was amazing, and we’re proud to have been part of such a meaningful effort.”

The Caldwell Fire Department extends its deepest gratitude to the American Red Cross for their outstanding partnership, and to Caldwell Starbucks and Jersey Mike’s Subs for generously donating food and drinks to keep our volunteers energized throughout the day.
