The Caldwell Police Department is pioneering the first Drone as First Responder (DFR) program in Idaho. This innovative public safety initiative is designed to improve emergency response times, increase situational awareness, and enhance overall community safety. The media and public are invited to attend an open house on January 22 from 5-6:30 p.m. in the Community Room at the Caldwell Police Department (110 S 5th Ave.). A demonstration of the drones and their capabilities will be highlighted.

The DFR program will support a wide range of operations, including search and rescue missions, disaster assessment, critical incident response, and traffic collision mapping. Officers will deploy a fleet of three Skydio X10 drones, equipped with high-resolution cameras, thermal imaging, and GPS capabilities. Drone charging and deployment stations (docks) will be strategically placed throughout the city to enable drones to reach most 911 calls in under two minutes, operating day or night and in most weather conditions.

Rex Ingram, Caldwell Chief of Police, said, “I am proud that our department is the first in the state of Idaho to acquire and launch a DFR program. Since our first deployment, we have successfully saved victims and held criminals accountable while reducing risk to the community and our personnel. Our DFR program will provide rapid aerial support during emergencies, giving officers real-time information that improves decision-making, keeping both the public and first responders safer. This technology represents a major step forward in how we serve and protect Caldwell.”

CPD will soon be turning to the community on social media to help name our three drones. We’re excited to see the creativity and fun ideas our community comes up with.

The Caldwell Police Department remains committed to protecting community privacy. All drone operations will follow strict privacy protocols, clearly defined guidelines, transparent reporting processes, and full compliance with local, state, and federal regulations. The program is expected to significantly reduce response times, increase officer and public safety, and provide more efficient support during emergencies across Caldwell.
