The City of Caldwell is notifying the public of an imminent weight restriction that will be implemented on Blaine Street at 6th Avenue following recent bridge inspection findings by the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD).

ITD has required that the older Indian Creek Bridge located under Blaine Street, just west of 6th Avenue, be posted with weight restrictions until the bridge can be removed. The restrictions will be in effect beginning January 14. While the bridge is currently the City’s responsibility (having been transferred from ITD to the City of Caldwell in 2019) these restrictions are required based on recent inspection results to ensure public safety.

This is significant, as the ITD-mandated weight restriction will impact commercial haulers as well as emergency vehicles and school buses.

Weight Restrictions:

  • Single-unit vehicles (not hauling a trailer):
    • Maximum total weight: 12 tons
    • Maximum axle weight: 5 tons
  • Vehicles hauling trailers:
    • Semi tractor-trailer combinations: 22 tons
    • Truck-trailer combinations: 28 tons

Vehicles exceeding these limits must use alternate routes until the new street section is in place. Passenger vehicles and pickup trucks may continue to cross the bridge until it is closed for the bridge removal project. A designated detour route for trucks will utilize 10th Avenue to Chicago Street to 5th Avenue as indicated. Detour signs will be posted.

A hard closure on Blaine will take place soon to remove this bridge and replace the roadway (dates to be announced). In addition, a previously scheduled replacement of the Kimball and Blaine Bridge will begin in early February. Detour routes will remain, utilizing S 10th Avenue, Chicago, and 5th Avenue.

The City appreciates the public’s cooperation and understanding as these necessary safety measures are implemented.
