Last night at 6:18 p.m., Caldwell Fire Department crews were dispatched to reports of smoke coming from the attic of a home on Michigan Avenue. Upon arrival, firefighters found an active fire in the attic and immediately began extinguishment efforts.

No one was home at the time of the fire. Crews were able to knock down the fire quickly and prevent it from spreading beyond the attic, though the home sustained significant smoke, water, and fire damage. The estimated loss is approximately $200,000.

A fire investigator determined that the fire was caused by an electrical short in the attic. Unfortunately, the home did not have any working smoke detectors at the time of the incident. The Caldwell Fire Department would like to remind all residents of the importance of having working smoke detectors in every level of the home and testing them regularly.

Two residents were displaced as a result of the fire. The Burn Out Fund, with assistance from the department, helped provide the family with immediate financial support and a hotel stay for the night.

During this incident, which required three engines, a truck company, a battalion chief, and a fire investigator, CFD crews also responded to three additional emergency calls, including a serious vehicle crash at Ustick and Cleveland.

Caldwell Fire extends gratitude to all firefighters and emergency personnel who worked swiftly to contain the fire and handle multiple calls simultaneously.
